Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA):
From Misunderstanding to Awareness

PDA has been recognised as a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. The behaviours observed are often confused with oppositional or disobedient behaviour. Learn about PDA and how to address the learning and social experiences.

PDA is considered to be a sub-type of ASD. Parents and teachers notice that the child won’t do anything that they are asked to do, even when it is a desirable activity. Children with PDA are highly anxious, which is why they tend to avoid real and perceived demands. Children with PDA can be quite social but at the same time controlling, which can impact on quality social interaction. In this online course, participants will be introduced to the main features of PDA and how to support the child presenting with this condition.

This online course will allow participants to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the features of PDA;
  • Understand responsive strategies which address their needs at school or at home.
